Rebecca Lou: “Trusting my vision 100% is the best I ever did for myself and my music”

Who are you – how did the band get together / when did you get together, what is your musical background?

I’ve been an active musician for quite a while now, but decided to start over a few years ago and totally “delete” my musical past and give myself the opportunity to musically recharge. I worked with some different people trying to find my way and eventually I met my band Joachim, August and Paw and found a constellation that really worked.

What type of music do you play – genre, expression, mood?

Empowering and self-confident in-your-face moped rock with a twist of Bikini Kill and Mariah Carey.

What was your first musical experience?

My first experience on stage, was at 13 years singing the solo in the middle school play. I also experimented with Jazz and pop music, but that never quite stuck with me like the rock music did. I was often told to lower my voice, but that just wasn’t that easy for me. Later on I dropped out of high school to play and learn as much I possibly could. I played with a lot of musicians that were way better than me and that educated me in life valuable stuff, music school just couldn’t have given me at that point.

What are your sources of inspiration – other bands, people, experiences?

My lyrics are somewhat biographical and revolve around themes such as body positivity, fighting like a girl, feminism and getting wasted in the streets of the concrete styles north western part of Copenhagen.Growing up I listened to a lot of bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Distillers and L7, but I’m also a huge sucker for a legendary pop song.

What is your ambition playing at SPOT?

My ambition is to reach a new crowd and give them a positive and different live experience. Hopefully I’ll also connect with some cool people that can help my further journey as an artist in a positive direction, in and especially outside Denmark.

Have you ever played abroad?

No unfortunately not yet, but my management is currently planning some UK showcases, hopefully this spring/summer and I’d like to visit Sweden and Germany this year too.

What is your dream as a musician?

To inspire to be rebellious.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned so far?

Be authentic, be yourself. I know it sounds corny AF, but nevertheless it can be really hard to find that confidence and rely on your vision and your worth as a human and artist. I spent a lot of time when I was younger trying to be more this- more that and compromising way to much. Trusting my vision 100% is the best I ever did for myself and my music. Be authentic, work hard, don’t quit and dream big.

Where do see yourself in five years?

In five years I’ve released my second album and tour heavily outside Denmark.
